What is a casino handpay?
A handpay is a payout that needs an attendant or a casino approval step. A machine may lock after a jackpot, a large win, a progressive or another payout requiring review.

- Step 01
1. Stay with the machine and call an attendant
Use the machine’s service button if staff have not arrived. The attendant can check the game, payout amount and machine record. If you need to leave to get identification, ask the attendant how to secure the payout first.

2. Verify your identity and the payout
Have government-issued photo ID ready and ask which second ID or tax form the casino needs. A visitor should bring a passport. Check that your name, address, tax status and the gross prize are correct. If withholding applies, ask the attendant to show the amount before you sign.
IRS 2026 W-2G and withholding instructions - Step 03
3. Choose from the property’s payout options
Ask whether this win will be paid in cash, by check, at the cage or through an eligible machine payment programme. Large or linked progressives can have additional verification and payout terms. Keep the payout receipt and your copy of any tax form. Ask how to obtain the form later if the casino does not issue it at the machine.

4. Get a record if the amount is disputed
Ask for a slot supervisor and note the machine number, game, time and amount shown. Keep your voucher and any written decision. Nevada has a formal process for unresolved gaming disputes, with casino notification duties that depend on the amount in dispute.

How much is a handpay in Vegas?
In 2026, a single qualifying slot win of $2,000 or more meets the federal W-2G reporting threshold for US taxpayers. Each slot play is assessed separately. The casino sets when a machine calls an attendant and how it pays the win.
One slot play or one bingo game at $2,000 or more
A slot spin that pays exactly $2,000 meets the 2026 threshold, even if you had only $10 in credits before the spin. For slots and bingo, use the gross amount won before subtracting the wager. The commonly quoted $1,200 slot figure is the earlier federal threshold. The IRS adjusts the minimum for inflation in future years.
IRS 2026 W-2G and withholding instructionsWhat if you build up $2,000 over several spins?
Suppose three separate spins pay $500, $700 and $900. They total $2,100 in prizes, but each spin paid less than $2,000. Those wins do not trigger the $2,000 slot jackpot reporting rule just because their combined value or your credit balance passes $2,000. Any money you loaded onto the machine is also part of its credit balance.
Cashing out a ticket worth $2,000 or more is a separate step. The casino may direct a large ticket to the cage or have staff verify it under its payout procedures. US taxpayers generally report gambling income even when they receive no W-2G.
Nevada slot payouts and voucher proceduresWhen two reportable jackpots appear on one form
If two separate plays pay $2,000 and $2,500, both meet the threshold on their own. The casino may put both wins on a single W-2G for that gaming day. The $4,500 on the form represents two reportable wins. It does not turn smaller, unrelated spins into a jackpot. MGM publishes how it handles this through its eligible Quick-Pay programme.

For keno, apply the $2,000 reporting amount after deducting the wager on the winning game. A $2,050 gross payout on a $100 winning wager leaves $1,950 for that test. Other game and withholding rules can still apply.
IRS 2026 W-2G and withholding instructionsSportsbooks, racing and table jackpots
Sports and many other wagering transactions use both the applicable dollar threshold and a payout of at least 300 times the wager. On qualifying transactions with net proceeds over $5,000, regular federal withholding is generally 24%. A high-payout table side bet can follow different reporting rules from an ordinary even-money table win. Ask how the specific wager is classified.
IRS 2026 W-2G and withholding instructionsPoker tournament prizes use the buy-in
The IRS’s 2026 Publication 1099 lists $2,000 as the general W-2G reporting threshold and includes poker tournaments. Its W-2G instructions tell tournament sponsors to apply the relevant threshold after subtracting the wager or buy-in for that event. Ordinary cash-game chips follow different rules. Ask the tournament cage which form it issues and what withholding applies to your payout.

Form W-9 gives the casino your tax details
The casino may use Form W-9 to obtain your correct taxpayer identification number, usually an SSN. IRS rules for reportable slot, bingo and keno winnings call for two forms of identification. A signed W-9 can serve as the non-photo form. The casino gives you Form W-2G when reporting applies. Jointly owned winnings can require Form 5754. Ask before the form is issued.
IRS 2026 W-2G and withholding instructionsA W-2G can show zero tax withheld
Regular 24% federal withholding does not apply to slots, bingo or keno. Backup withholding at 24% can apply to reportable winnings if you do not give a correct TIN. Federal income tax can still be due even if the casino pays the full jackpot. US taxpayers generally report gambling income even when they receive no W-2G.
IRS gambling income and loss guidanceThe 2026 loss deduction changed
For a US recreational player who itemizes, the 2026 federal deduction is generally limited to the smaller of 90% of documented wagering losses and total wagering gains. If your properly measured gains and losses were each $4,000, this rule allows up to $3,600 in losses. Keep a log, receipts, tickets and statements. Nevada has no individual state income tax, while federal and home-state rules can still apply.
IRS Publication 505 for 2026UK, Canadian and Australian players
A passport helps identify you. Your US tax status and treaty residence determine which rules apply. US citizens abroad, green card holders and people with dual-status or professional gambling income may need different treatment.
Start with the US nonresident rule
Taxable US gambling winnings paid to nonresident visitors generally face 30% federal withholding on gross proceeds. For a taxable $3,000 slot jackpot with full 30% withholding, $900 is withheld and the initial payout is $2,100. The 2026 domestic W-2G threshold does not govern Form 1042-S. Nonbusiness winnings from blackjack, baccarat, craps, roulette and big-6 wheel are expressly exempt. Check how a separate bonus or side bet is classified.
IRS Publication 515 on nonresident gambling incomeUK treaty residents can qualify for relief
Article 22 of the US–UK treaty generally exempts covered nonbusiness gambling income from US federal tax for eligible UK treaty residents. Give the casino a valid W-8BEN before payment if it can accept your claim. IRS gambling guidance allows a US or qualifying foreign TIN for this purpose. Ask the property in advance which identifiers and supporting documents it can process. A UK passport by itself does not establish treaty residence.
US Treasury explanation of UK treaty Article 22Canadian residents can have a US loss-offset route
A Canadian nonresident visitor generally faces 30% withholding on taxable US wins. The treaty can allow documented US gambling losses against US gambling winnings, within the applicable limits, when filing Form 1040-NR with Schedule NEC. A refund depends on the final calculation and proof. Use the instructions for your tax year, especially given the 2026 US wagering-loss rule change.
US–Canada treaty, Article XXIIAustralian residents usually face standard withholding
The US–Australia treaty permits the US to tax relevant US-source other income. Australian nonresident visitors generally face the standard 30% withholding on taxable slot wins, with the same federal exceptions for qualifying table games. A US return can be useful if tax was overwithheld or an exception applied. Australia does not have Canada’s specific US gambling-loss treaty rule.

W-8BEN goes to the casino
Non-US individuals use W-8BEN to certify foreign status and claim an eligible treaty rate. Give it to the casino or withholding agent. The casino may ask for your tax residence, address, date of birth and tax identifier. For a UK claim, check the correct treaty article and the casino’s documentation process before signing.
IRS Form W-8BEN instructionsForm 1042-S records foreign-person income
For reportable nonresident casino winnings, request your copy of Form 1042-S and keep the payout receipt. Gambling winnings generally use income code 28. A treaty-exempt payment can still be reportable with zero tax withheld. Check your name, country, gross income and withholding amount. The five exempt table games have separate reporting treatment.
IRS Form 1042-S instructionsForm W-7 is for an ITIN
Use Form W-7 if you need a US individual taxpayer identification number and are ineligible for an SSN. The IRS has a specific casino exception for eligible treaty claims involving a gaming official who is an IRS ITIN Acceptance Agent. Ask if that service is available for your payout. For a later application, review IRS passport or certified-copy rules and current processing times.
IRS Form W-7 instructions and casino exceptionForm 1040-NR can reconcile withholding later
If the casino withheld tax despite an eligible exemption, or if you have a qualified Canadian loss claim, keep all 1042-S forms and filing records. Use the current Form 1040-NR instructions and Schedule NEC, including any applicable treaty disclosure. If you need an ITIN, check whether W-7 should accompany the return. A cross-border tax adviser can help with an individual claim.
IRS Form 1040-NR and instructionsHow procedures differ between casinos
The federal tax rules apply across casinos. Resorts can differ in when an attendant is called, where they pay you, which documents they can process on the floor and how they send copies of tax forms.
MGM Quick-Pay at select machines
MGM publishes a self-pay programme for eligible US citizens and residents with qualifying jackpots from $2,000 to $49,999. Ask a slot representative about enrolment, then use your MGM Rewards card and PIN on an eligible machine. MGM still issues the W-2G. The programme does not deduct taxes at the machine and is subject to its eligibility rules.

Caesars lets members generate a prior-year win/loss statement in their Rewards account or app. Ask the casino cage how to obtain or replace your actual W-2G or 1042-S. The account statement and the individual tax form serve different purposes.

The IRS Nevada directory lists these properties as acceptance agents. Confirm with the slot department or cage whether an authorised gaming official is available for a treaty-related W-7 at the time you play. An IRS listing for one casino does not establish the procedure at another property in the same group.
IRS Nevada acceptance agent directoryFour questions to ask before you play
Ask what triggers an attendant on your machine, which payout methods this property offers, what it accepts for your tax status and how you get a copy of your tax form. If you plan to claim a treaty rate, ask specifically about W-8BEN, foreign TIN or ITIN, and the availability of trained staff.
Nevada Gaming Control Board slot payout guidanceWhat to take home
Record the payout and keep original paperwork
Keep your tax form, jackpot receipt and a log of the date, property, game and amount withheld. Check whether the casino has a secure way to retrieve copies. MGM, for example, provides a separate W-2G and 1042-S tax summary request. A win/loss statement is useful supporting information.
MGM tax information and statement requestsIf you carry a large cash payout across the border
US Customs and Border Protection requires reporting when you transport more than US$10,000 in currency and covered monetary instruments into or out of the United States. Use FinCEN Form 105 when required. This is a border declaration separate from the casino tax form.
US Customs cash reporting guidanceCommon questions
Does a $2,000 credit balance trigger a handpay?
A balance built up across separate wins below $2,000 does not meet the 2026 slot jackpot reporting threshold by itself. The threshold applies to $2,000 or more won on one slot play. A casino can still require staff to process a large cash-out ticket.
Is a $1,200 slot jackpot still reportable in 2026?
For a US taxpayer, $2,000 is the 2026 federal W-2G threshold for an individual qualifying slot win. A casino can still call an attendant at a different amount, and US taxpayers generally report gambling winnings even without a form.
Does a UK passport mean the casino pays the full amount?
Treaty eligibility depends on tax residence and other conditions. Bring your passport and ask the casino which documents it accepts for a UK treaty claim on W-8BEN before payout.
Can Canadian and Australian visitors both reclaim the 30%?
Eligible Canadian residents may offset documented US losses on a US return within applicable limits. Australian residents generally face standard withholding on taxable casino winnings and may have a claim if tax was withheld incorrectly.
Can I use a win/loss statement instead of the tax form?
Keep both where available. The W-2G or 1042-S records the reportable payout and withholding. A casino win/loss statement can help reconstruct play alongside your own records.
