NEW TO THE NEON?

First time in Las Vegas?

Vegas First-Timer’s Playbook

Spend less on surprises. Save more for the good stuff. Practical Las Vegas tips for your first trip—from hotel minibars and casino rewards to happy hours and getting around.

Your first-night shortcut

Check in, leave the minibar alone, buy water and snacks, join your casino’s rewards programme and pick a nearby dinner. Save the marathon sightseeing for tomorrow.

Check in smart

Hands off the minibar

Hotel minibar snacks and drinks can be eye-wateringly expensive. Some use sensors that register an item being moved. Leave everything in place unless you intend to buy it, read the in-room price list and check your bill before you leave. Do not empty the minibar to make space for your own supplies.

Look for a separate empty fridge

Some rooms have a second, empty fridge for your own drinks; others do not. Check the room description or ask reception which fridge is for personal use. A minibar is not a substitute for a food-safe refrigerator. A requested personal fridge may cost extra.

Stock up outside the hotel

Compare supermarket, convenience-store and pharmacy prices for bottled water, soft drinks and snacks instead of paying minibar prices. Buy what you will use, then collect ice from your hotel’s guest ice machine where provided. Use the ice bucket or an insulated container, and ask staff where the nearest machine is.

Ask about upgrades—without expecting one

Ask reception politely whether any complimentary upgrades are available. The famous “$20 tip” is an unofficial visitor anecdote, not a hotel offer: a tip may get you nothing and need not be returned. Availability and hotel policy decide. Confirm the total price before accepting any paid upgrade.

Check the whole hotel bill

Look beyond the advertised nightly rate. Confirm resort fees, parking, taxes, early check-in charges and any incidental deposit with your hotel. A card hold can temporarily reduce your available balance; ask when it will be released.

Make rewards work for you

Make the most of eligible rewards—without chasing them.

Get your players card before you play

Join the casino’s loyalty programme before gambling and ask the rewards desk about current new-member promotions or free play. Bring the required photo ID, check the qualifying spend and expiry, and use your card correctly. Properties in the same rewards family may share one account; you do not need to open duplicate accounts.

Connect your room and rewards account

At MGM and Caesars properties, ask reception to attach your loyalty number to your reservation. Charge eligible participating restaurants, bars and other purchases to your room where permitted, then check that rewards were credited. Not every outlet or charge qualifies, and booking-channel rules differ. Keep receipts and ask before paying.

Try myVEGAS before your trip

Play the myVEGAS games and learn how their loyalty currency and rewards work before you travel. Read the reward’s dates, redemption rules, room requirements and purchase limits before planning around it. Games offer optional purchases; paying is not necessary just to start playing, and a reward is not a reason to spend more than its value.

Give your gambling a spending limit

Set an entertainment budget before your first spin or hand, and stop when you reach it. Casino rewards do not make losses a bargain. Do not gamble extra just to qualify for free play, a room or a drink.

Eat and drink for less

Know how casino drinks work

At many Las Vegas casinos, a cocktail server can offer complimentary drinks to eligible customers who are actively gambling. Ask what is included; service and play requirements vary, especially at video-poker bars. Tip courteously for service, but tips do not guarantee repeat visits. Buying a drink can cost less than gambling while waiting for one.

Bringing your own? Check first

You may be able to carry your own drink through some casino public areas, but do not assume every casino, restaurant, pool or entertainment venue allows it. Ask staff, follow any container restrictions and never take outside drinks into a venue that prohibits them.

Build dinner around happy hour

Look up the days and times before heading out. Some happy hours apply only at the bar or to a separate food menu, and kitchen hours can end before the venue closes. Keep a nearby backup, especially late at night.

Passing Casino Royale? Compare the drinks

Casino Royale promotes its casino bar as a value stop on the Strip. It is worth checking the displayed prices when you pass. Promotions and drink sizes change, so read the current menu instead of relying on an old advertised price.

Browse bars and drink stops →

Plan your late-night food before you need it

A 24-hour casino does not mean its restaurants serve all night. Check the specific kitchen’s closing time, not just the bar’s hours, and allow time to order before last service.

Check the receipt before tipping

Look for an included gratuity or service charge, particularly with groups, so you know what has already been added. Keep small bills for staff tips and use our calculator when splitting a meal.

Master the distances

Comfy shoes beat sore feet

Everything looks closer than it is. Walking from your room through a huge casino, across a pedestrian bridge and into the next resort can take much longer than expected. Wear comfortable shoes, group nearby stops together and leave spare time before shows and dinner.

Uber and taxi pickups are often different

Follow signs to your hotel’s designated rideshare zone and check the pickup pin in the app. It can be on another level or a different side of the property from the taxi rank. Reach the correct pickup area before requesting your ride, then check the vehicle and driver details.

Use the free connections

Look for resort walkways and complimentary tram routes between selected hotels. The Las Vegas Monorail is a different service and generally requires a ticket. Check operating times and the actual station entrance before choosing your route.

See the Monorail guide →

Downtown is a separate outing

The Fremont Street area is not the next block along from the central Strip. Plan transport and explore Downtown and the Arts District as a group of nearby stops rather than repeatedly travelling back and forth.

Pack for desert days and cold air-conditioning

Carry water, sun protection and a light layer. Leave outdoor exploring for cooler parts of hot days and take breaks. Winter evenings can feel very different from the daytime sunshine.

Book the one thing you would hate to miss

Reserve your must-see show or special dinner first, then leave space for discoveries. Check the venue, date, local start time, age rules, dress code and cancellation terms before buying. Allow time for security and walking inside the resort.

Keep your ID and ticket backups handy

Carry the original identification your venue requires and protect your documents. Save booking details before leaving Wi-Fi, but check whether entry needs the provider’s live barcode rather than a screenshot. Do not assume an offline copy replaces the original ticket.

Make room for the free sights

You do not need a paid ticket for every memorable Vegas moment. Add free attractions between reservations and check their current operating information. A relaxed first trip can be better than racing to complete a long list.
