Traffic and neon lights along Las Vegas Boulevard at night
THE STRIP IS JUST THE START

Las Vegas car hire.
Go beyond the neon.

Red-rock canyons. Mountain air. A road trip on your terms. Find out when hiring a car makes sense, what it really costs and where to go beyond the bright lights.

YOUR PACE.
YOUR DETOUR.
A BETTER TRIP, NOT AN EXTRA BILL

Should you hire a car in Vegas?

Choose around the trip you actually want. A car buys flexibility beyond the city; it also brings fuel, parking and pickup time.

HIRE IT

You want to get out there.

Desert viewpoints, mountain scenery and several stops in one day are easier on your own schedule. Split the agreed costs with your group and leave room for a detour.

SKIP IT

Your plans are on the Strip.

Hotel parking and traffic can make a car more effort than it saves. Compare walking, resort connections, the Monorail, taxis and a pre-booked tour.

SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE

Rent for your adventure days.

A one- or two-day rental can work better than paying for a parked car all week. Group your day trips together and check collection and return hours carefully.

Compare the whole cost.

Rental total + fuel + hotel and attraction parking + extras. Then compare that with your realistic taxi or tour budget for the same plans.

TURN A VEGAS DAY INTO AN ADVENTURE

Great drives within roughly two hours.

These are approximate one-way planning times from the Strip, before parking, stops, queues or closures. Check your actual hotel-to-destination route on the day.

Your adventure mood board · destinations sit on different routes, so choose a direction for each day.

01Clouds over the dramatic escarpment at Red Rock Canyon30–45 min
Sandstone & scenic stops

Red Rock Canyon

An easy escape from the casino skyline into towering sandstone. The 13-mile, one-way Scenic Drive gives you viewpoints and trailheads without committing to an all-day road trip.

Know before you go

Book a Scenic Drive entry time for visits between 8am and 5pm, 1 October–31 May. The reservation and entrance fee are separate. Choose a walk for your ability and the weather.

02The seven colourful rock towers of Seven Magic Mountains in the desert30–45 min
Desert art & colour

Seven Magic Mountains

Bright stacks of painted boulders against the open desert make a memorable change of scene. This is a photo stop south of the city rather than a full day of activities.

Know before you go

Admission is free, with parking on site. There are no visitor facilities or public transport to the installation. Bring water, check the official visit information and leave the artwork untouched.

Official visiting information
03A creative reflection of a palm-lined Boulder City street35–50 min
A slower-paced afternoon

Boulder City

Historic streets, cafés and a very different pace from the Strip. Use Boulder City as a lunch stop around a Hoover Dam outing, or enjoy a relaxed afternoon in its own right.

Know before you go

Build in time to park and wander rather than treating it as a drive-through. Combining Boulder City and Hoover Dam is more practical than trying to squeeze in destinations on opposite sides of the valley.

Boulder City & Hoover Dam route advice
04Hoover Dam and its Colorado River canyon setting45–60 min
Big engineering. Bigger views.

Hoover Dam

See the dam, the Colorado River setting and the monumental concrete structure that helped shape the region. A self-drive visit lets you choose your time at the viewpoints and add Boulder City.

Know before you go

Allow for the Nevada security checkpoint and parking. A drive across the dam is different from a ticketed visitor-centre or interior tour. Check tour availability, access and security rules before leaving.

Official access, tours & security
05Panoramic view across Boulder Basin at Lake Mead45–60 min
Water, desert & open space

Lake Mead

Trade the casino floor for lake-and-desert scenery around Boulder Basin. Decide on a specific overlook, marina or activity before setting off: Lake Mead is a large recreation area, not one roadside attraction.

Know before you go

An entrance fee applies and the park is cashless. Lake levels, access roads and facilities can change. Check the exact destination, bring water and keep to open, suitable roads.

National Park Service trip planning
06A winding road through pine forest beneath Mount Charleston60–90 min
Mountain air & forest scenery

Mount Charleston

Pine forests and mountain scenery give you another side of southern Nevada. Choose a scenic drive or a suitable open trail, with time for the slower mountain roads.

Know before you go

Conditions can be very different from the Strip. Check weather, road and trail closures before travelling, especially in winter, and check your rental agreement before a route requiring snow equipment.

Mountain visitor information & conditions
07A scenic road between red sandstone formations at Valley of Fire60–90+ min
A red-rock road-trip day

Valley of Fire

Dramatic sandstone, scenic roads and short stops make this a rewarding dedicated day out. Give the landscape time rather than combining it with a long list of other attractions.

Know before you go

Check park alerts before choosing your route. West-entrance construction can require a longer approach. The park lists a 1–14 December maintenance closure and seasonal summer trail closures; do not assume every road or trail is open.

08Vintage artefacts and antiques inside the general store at Eldorado Canyon45–60+ min
Wild West history & vintage curiosities

Nelson Ghost Town & Techatticup Mine

Weathered buildings, vintage vehicles and desert scenery make Eldorado Canyon a very different day out from the Strip. Add a guided Techatticup Mine tour if you want the story behind the setting, rather than only a photo stop.

Know before you go

Check in at the general store on arrival. Mine tours require a reservation and a minimum group; confirm the current time, price and holiday closures with the operator. Ask about photography permissions and fees before a shoot. Bring a layer for the cooler mine interior.

GIVE THE CANYON ITS OWN DAY

Grand Canyon West?
Think bigger than a quick detour.

Allow around 2–2½ hours each way, plus your time exploring. Grand Canyon West is separate from Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim, which is roughly 4½–5 hours each way from Vegas.

Compare the drive, admission and any optional experiences with an organised tour. Leave your evening flexible.

A LITTLE CHECKING. A LOT LESS GUESSWORK.

Before you press “book”.

Compare like for like. The right rental is the one whose terms fit your driver, route and budget.

The full price

Compare the rental total, taxes, airport or location fees, fuel, parking and extras. Check whether a one-way return costs more. A cheap daily rate is only the starting point.

The driver & deposit

Read the age and licence requirements, card rules and deposit amount before booking. The main driver needs the required documents and enough available funds on an accepted card in their own name.

What the cover includes

Check the excess or deductible, exclusions and roadside assistance. Understand whether any separate policy reimburses you later rather than removing the rental-company deposit.

Fuel, mileage & extras

Compare the fuel policy, mileage allowance, additional drivers, child seats and late-return terms. Check whether your route and vehicle use are permitted; desert scenery is not permission to drive off-road.

Read the Booking.com car-rental terms and the specific supplier conditions shown with your quote.

The parking bill belongs in your budget.

Check your hotel’s self-parking, valet and in-and-out rules, then allow for other resorts and attractions. A rewards card or room booking only helps where the current terms explicitly include that parking benefit.

LASRENT-A-CAR
CENTER
LAND. COLLECT. EXPLORE.

Picking up a car at Harry Reid Airport.

Many major suppliers use the Rent-A-Car Center at 7135 Gilespie Street, around three miles south of the airport. Your booking determines the actual collection point; some off-airport suppliers need another transfer.

  • Terminal 1: follow Ground Transportation to Level 1, outside doors 10 and 11, for the rental shuttle.
  • Terminal 3: follow Ground Transportation to Level Zero; shuttle stops are at both ends.
  • Returning: allow time to refuel, return the car and take the shuttle back to your terminal.

Airport connector works are affecting shuttle journeys through December 2026. Allow extra time and check the airport’s current advice.

Official airport pickup & return instructions
KEEP THE DAY EASY

Drive smart. Leave room to enjoy it.

Inspect before you leave.

Photograph the car’s condition, record existing damage and check the fuel reading. Learn the controls and set your route while parked. Check the return instructions before your final day.

Plan for the landscape.

Carry water, download your route and check weather and road alerts. Desert heat and winter mountain conditions need different plans. Use official open roads and designated parking.

Separate driving from drinks.

Plan a sober driver or leave the car parked and use a taxi. A day trip followed by late-night Vegas deserves breathing space, not a tightly timed drive straight from the desert to a show.

YOUR VEGAS CAR-HIRE QUESTIONS

The details that make a difference.

Do I need a car in Las Vegas?

A car is useful for day trips and a flexible itinerary beyond the Strip. If most of your plans are central-Strip hotels, meals and shows, walking, resort connections, the Monorail and occasional taxis can be simpler. Compare the whole cost rather than the headline rental rate.

Is it worth hiring a car for just one or two days?

Often, that is the compromise worth comparing. Keep your car-free Strip days together, then rent for the days you want the desert, mountains or a longer outing. Include travel to the pickup location, opening hours and any extra parking or return charges.

Can I hire a car at Harry Reid International Airport?

Yes. Many major rental companies use the separate Rent-A-Car Center at 7135 Gilespie Street, around three miles south of the airport, reached by a courtesy shuttle. Check your booking because an off-airport supplier can require an additional transfer. Allow time for the shuttle, queue, inspection and return.

Can UK visitors drive a rental car in Las Vegas?

Check the official US travel guidance and the specific supplier’s conditions. Bring your physical driving licence and the identification and payment card the rental company requires. International permit, minimum-age, licence-history, card and deposit rules can depend on the driver and supplier; do not assume every rental has the same requirements.

Is hotel parking included with my rental?

Car hire does not automatically include hotel parking. Check self-parking and valet prices, in-and-out privileges and any current hotel or rewards-status entitlement. Parking at another resort can be a separate charge even when your own hotel parking is included.

Can I drive to the Grand Canyon within two hours?

Grand Canyon West is around two to two-and-a-half hours each way depending on your starting point and traffic, so treat it as a full-day outing at the edge of that radius. It is not the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. The South Rim is roughly four-and-a-half to five hours each way from Vegas and needs a much bigger time allowance.

Does Booking.com provide the rental car itself?

Your booking identifies the rental company supplying the vehicle. Compare the supplier’s pickup details, fuel policy, mileage, deposit, cancellation conditions and cover before paying. The car pictured commonly represents a category; only rely on an exact model if your booking explicitly guarantees it.
